GENICE II
GENICE II is a multidisciplinary research project based out of the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) at the University of Manitoba.
Through collaboration between different research activities, the aim is to use large-scale genomics to address the most credible oil spill threats in the Arctic by using actual shipping incidents as operational scenarios, providing a framework for addressing these risks in a way that communities, governmental agencies, and shipping and mining industries can learn from and plan for. Sapujiyiit Society is involved at the community scale in Chesterfield Inlet, where our Guardians provide guiding, sample collection, logistical support and interpretation for researchers.

Ice monitoring with SmartICE and SIKU
Since late 2022, Sapujiyiit Society Guardians have been using the SIKU smartphone app developed by Arctic Eider Society to make observations of dangerous and novel ice conditions. In late 2024, we began collaborating with SmartICE to increase the sophistication of our ice monitoring program by introducing SmartBUOYS and SmartQAMUTIKS to each of our communities for continuous ice monitoring.
